Analytical Modeling of Peer-to-peer File Sharing Systems

چکیده
In this paper, we present a survey of recent work in analytical modeling of peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing systems. We focus on the modeling of three aspects of such systems. First, we describe several performance models regarding chunk-based protocols such as BitTorrent [1]. Secondly, we summarize a trace analysis and corresponding model of the workload and user behavior in a general file sharing context. Finally, we give a summary of a study into the effect of pollution attacks.

Peer-to-peer applications (P2P) are no longer limited to home users, and start being accepted in academic and corporate environments. While file sharing and instant messaging applications are the most traditional examples, they are no longer the only ones benefiting from the potential advantages of P2P networks. For example, network file storage, data transmission, distributed computing, and co...
متن کاملPerformance Modeling of BitTorrent Peer-to-Peer File Sharing Networks
BitTorrent is undoubtedly the most popular P2P file sharing application on today’s Internet. The widespread popularity of BitTorrent has attracted a great deal of attention from networking researchers who conducted various performance studies on it. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of analytical performance modeling techniques for BitTorrent networks. The performance models examined i...
متن کاملModeling Peer-Peer File Sharing Systems
Peer-peer networking has recently emerged as a new paradigm for building distributed networked applications. In this paper we develop simple mathematical models to explore and illustrate fundamental performance issues of peer-peer file sharing systems. The modeling framework introduced and the corresponding solution method are flexible enough to accommodate different characteristics of such sys...
متن کاملModeling of Epidemic Diffusion in Peer-to-Peer File-Sharing Networks
In this paper we propose an analytical model for file diffusion in a peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing network based on biological epidemics. During the downloading process, the peer shares the downloaded parts of the file and, thus, contributes to distributing it in the network. This behavior is similar to the spreading of epidemic diseases which is a well researched subject in mathematical biol...
متن کاملFluid Stochastic Petri Nets for Computing Transfer Time Distributions in Peer-to-Peer File Sharing Applications
This paper presents an application of the Fluid Stochastic Petri Net (FSPN) formalism for the analysis of the transfer time distribution in peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing applications. The transfer of the resource follows a successful search; the transfer time is mainly dominated by network characteristics, application characteristics, resource characteristics, and user behavior. The proposed ...
